October 2018 - For several years, we have offered our customers an exclusive service: custom cutting of dip tubes for pumps and sprayers to fit their bottles.


Initially, this service was outsourced through our partnerships with job programs for people with disabilities. However, given the increasing demand, we had to find a solution to improve performance and lead times
 

 

A recruitment and a youth project

We decided to transform this need into a CSR* project combining "diversity" and "youth initiatives".

We started by creating an internal position open to applicants with disabilities (Amipi Foundation/Cap Emploi). Tony Abolivier joined Fidel Fillaud as the new Production Agent. Since March 2017, Tony has been responsible for most of the orders for dip tube cutting.
 

Then we began working with a school, La Joliverie Apprenticeship Training Centre, tasking the students with building a precision cutting machine. The 12 students in the Design and Construction of Automated Systems program successfully completed the assignment, coached by their teachers Damien Morilleau and Pierre Jacob.

Project Phases

In April 2017, we delivered our specifications which included 4 major requirements:

•    quality of the cut
•    machine productivity
•    safety in use
•    workstation comfort

On this basis, the teachers designed the plans for the machine, then the students made a model, which they then carefully studied in order to make the adjustments and improvements needed to build the final machine.

All the students worked on the project but each of them had a specific role and responsibility:

  • Antoine : Safety & feed chute
  • Baptiste : Pneumatic assembly and wiring
  • Benjamin : Conveyor drive configuration
  • Dorian : Presser, upper guide & upper guide drive configuration
  • Edgar : Mounting and adjustment of the knife
  • Eliott : Electrical cabinet
  • Jérémy : Lifting drive configuration
  • Mano : Mechanical assembly of conveyor spacing
  • Marine : Mechanical assembly of conveyors
  • Matthieu : Assembly of machine frame
  • Maxime : HMI (Human Machine Interface) & spacing drive configuration
  • Thomas : Mechanical assembly of the lifting system

In February 2018, the company was invited by the school to:

  • Discover the 3D plans realised with the CAD tool, « Autodesk Inventor 2017 ». 
  • Visit the 3D printing room, while pieces for the machine were manufactured 
  • Attend a presentation and test the model

During this visit, both identified the strenghts of the machine and the areas for improvement.

On June 21, during a visit to the school, our machine operator, Tony Abolivier and Christophe Jouin, Warehouse Manager, saw the new machine for the first time.

In July, the machine was installed at Fidel Fillaud.

 

 

A positive experience

For the students

"For us it was an enriching experience on a personal level and formative in many ways. It was a technically complex project that required skills in various technologies: mechanics, automation, electricity, digital interface...

It was also a real group effort requiring teamwork and discussions, where everyone was able to speak up and contribute their ideas. This ambitious and comprehensive project enabled us to really apply the knowledge acquired during our classes and even beyond!"

For the trainers

"This project was totally in line with the training requirements. It was innovative and offering a wealth of learning opportunities (especially technical ones), for the students and the trainers." 

Our partner, FIDEL FILLAUD, reacted quickly and was involved in the project. This allowed us to finish the machine in time: both for the final exam and for a delivery in July, as planned at the beginning of the project.

This project is a considerable human and technical achievement.

In conclusion…

 

Our new sprayer and pump dip tube custom cutting service is up and running, which will enable us to quickly double our tube cutting capacity and meet demand both in terms of quantity and quality.

 

*ESAT: Etablissement et Service d'Aide par le Travail = adapted medico-social work structure, reserved for people with disabilities and aimed at their social and professional integration or reintegration.  The former name was: CAT (Centre d'Aide par le Travail).
